THE CORRELATION BETWEEN FREQUENCY OF LISTENING TO ENGLISH SONGS AND VOCABULARY SIZE BY THE STUDENTS OF ENGLISH STUDY PROGRAM AT ISLAMIC DORMITORY OF STAIN PALANGKA RAYA

The purpose of the research is looking for the correlation betweenf requency of listening to english songs and vocabulary size by the students of english study program at islamic dormitory of STAIN Palangka Raya. The writer was interested to conduct this research because basically vocabulary is important thing that must be applied in learning a language. When the students
have a lot of vocabulary they will find it is easy to learn a language. One of the way in increasing vocabulary size is by listening to english songs. Based on opinion above, the writer done this case to be proved.
The types of this study is correlational study. The population in this research was all of the students of english study program who stay in islamic dormitory of STAIN Palangka Raya with the number 104 students and the number of sample were 51 students that choosen randomly. This research had two variables that are frequency of listening to english songs (variable X) and vocabulary size (variable Y). The instrument in collecting the data was questionnaire and test. The questionnaire was used to collect the data to of frequency of listening to english songs while the test were used to collect the data of vocabulary size, and the technique which were used to analyze the data were correlation serial formula.
The result of this study shows that there is avarage correlation between frequency of listening to english songs and vocabulary size. The value rser 0,430 so that Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. Based on df was found 0,281 > 0,430 < 0,364, so, it meant that there is avarge correlation and correlation was positive. The calculation contribution of variable X and variable Y showed that value of KP was 18,49% it meant that contribution of variable X to variable Y was 18,49%, and 81,51% was influence by other aspect. Based on the calculation of tvalue was 3.334 and ttable 2.009 so it meant that tvalue > ttable. Based on the reslut of the study it is known that alternative hypothesis was accepted and zero hypothesis was rejected.
