THE STUDENTS’ SPEAKING PROBLEMS IN RETELLING STORY AT SMAN-1 MENTAYA HILIR SELATAN

The principle purposes of this study are to identify the students’ speaking skill in retelling story of class XI IPA 2 at SMAN-1 Mentaya Hilir Selatan. And to identify the students’ speaking problems in retelling story of class XI IPA 2 at SMAN-1 Mentaya Hilir Selatan. Therefore, the purposes of this study are to describe the students’ speaking skill and the students’ speaking problems in retelling story of class XI IPA 2 at SMAN-1 Mentaya Hilir Selatan.
In this study, the writer uses qualitative research. In collecting the data, the writer uses some techniques such as observation, interview, and documentation. In analyzing the data, the writer used some steps which are data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The subjects of this study are 26 students of class XI IPA 2 at SMAN-1 Mentaya Hilir Selatan. To choose the subjects, the writer uses purposive sampling.
The main research findings were:
1.The students’ speaking skill in retelling story of class XI IPA 2 at SMAN-1 Mentaya Hilir Selatan was conducted when the teacher wants to assess or test the students’ speaking skill, the teacher asks the students to retell the story which has been told before. By retelling a story, the teacher can know the students’ speaking problems.
2.It was found five students’ speaking problems in retelling story of class XI IPA 2 at SMAN-1 Mentaya Hilir Selatan. They were the state of nervous, vocabulary mastery, understanding grammar, constructing speaking ideas, and psychological factors.
