THE PROBLEMS IN USING GERUNDS MADE BY THE FOURTH SEMESTER STUDENTS OF ENGLISH EDUCATION STUDY PROGRAM AT STAIN PALANGKA RAYA

The principle purposes of the study as follows: a) To find out the students’ problems in using gerunds as subject made by fourth semester students of English Education Study Program at STAIN of Palangka Raya. b) To find out the students’ problems in using gerunds as object made by fourth semester students of English Education Study Program at STAIN of Palangka Raya. c) To find out the students’ problems in using gerunds as subjective complement made by fourth semester students of English Education Study Program at STAIN of Palangka Raya. d) To find out the students’ problems in using gerunds as object of preposition made by fourth semester students of English Education Study Program at STAIN of Palangka Raya.
This study used quantitative research and the content analysis as design of the study where the test were employed in the collecting the data. To collect the data is used test. The analysis of the data used collecting the data, coding, scoring, and got the conclusion. Populations of this study were fourth semester students of English Education Study Program at STAIN of Palangka Raya. Sample of this study consist of 19 students.
Based on research findings, it was concluded the problems faced by the students in using gerunds as subject was affixation in gerunds. They omitted suffix –ing after the verb in subject position. The problems faced by the students in using gerunds as object was how to apply gerunds and to infinitive, and also affixation in gerunds. They used to infinitive before gerunds and omitted suffix –ing after the verb in object position. The problems faced by the students in using gerunds as subjective complement was affixation. They omitted suffix –ing after the verb in gerunds as subjective complement. The problems faced by the students in using gerunds as object of preposition was how to apply simple present tense, present continuous tense, and affixation. They omitted suffix –ing after the verb as gerund. They used present continuous tense as V + ing, and omitted suffix –ing in verb after preposition.
